Souvik Dutta: 20 Years of Abstract Logix

Read "Souvik Dutta: 20 Years of Abstract Logix" reviewed by Mike Jacobs

If you are a music lover, you may already know the name Souvik (pronounced show-vik) Dutta. Over the last 20 years, he has taken his Abstract Logix enterprise from a pre-YouTube streaming platform to a music retail website to a niche imprint to a respected independent label boasting a top-tier roster that includes the likes of ...

Michael Dease: Found in Space - The Music of Gregg Hill

Read "Michael Dease: Found in Space - The Music of Gregg Hill" reviewed by Bill Milkowski

The title itself is revealing. A clever play on words of the old '60s sci-fi show Lost in Space, it immediately suggests an irreverent wit and slightly twisted perspective; qualities that also permeate the unique music of prolific Michigan-based composer Gregg Hill. How this fairly obscure presence on the national music scene has managed ...

Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention: Whisky A Go Go 1968

Read "Whisky A Go Go 1968" reviewed by Mario Calvitti

Feats Don't Fail Me Now (Deluxe Edition) (3CD)

Read "Feats Don't Fail Me Now (Deluxe Edition) (3CD)" reviewed by Doug Collette

Inside the twenty-page booklet enclosed within the Feats Don't Fail Me Now (Deluxe Edition), an erudite essay by esteemed author/biographer Dennis McNally gives due recognition to artist Neon Park's outlandish front cover image for Little Feat's fourth longplayer. As with the other imagery of this artist that adorns the group's various longplayers, it is a thought-provoking ...

Cassie Kinoshi: Letting The Sunshine In

Read "Cassie Kinoshi: Letting The Sunshine In" reviewed by Chris May

Cassie Kinoshi, the acclaimed British composer and alto saxophonist, made her name as a founder member of the Afrobeat-inspired band Kokoroko and with her own ten-piece Seed Ensemble. Her work pushes social change, interrogating inequality and injustice, mainly through instrumental music, occasionally with lyrics, and always with invention and singularity. Seed's sophomore album, gratitude (International Anthem, ...

Joe Santa Maria: Echo Deep

Read "Echo Deep" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

The Stinkfoot Orchestra

Active since:

The Stinkfoot Orchestra is a 14-piece tribute to Frank Zappa from San Jose, CA which is fronted by Zappa alumni (alternately, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ray White and Ike Willis). Boasting a 6-piece horn section, tuned percussion and 5 vocalists, SFO delivers the intricacies and eccentricities of Frank’s music with power and precision – all the while remaining true to the Maestro’s sardonic wit and proclivity to bring comedic entertainment value to the stage with every performance. Despite their relatively short existence (the band played their first show in the fall of 2021), the ensemble has managed to garner world-wide attention and has been touring up and down the West Coast building a faithful following since the summer of 2022

Ludovico Granvassu's Garden of Jazzy Delights 2023

Read "Ludovico Granvassu's Garden of Jazzy Delights 2023" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

If it is true that, like The Police once put it, “when the world is going down you make the best of what's still around," then throughout 2023 jazz fans were better off than most other social groups. In a year in which everyday news brought ever more inconceivable disappointments, jazz musicians, labels, festivals and venues ...

Les McCann: Never Say No Again

Read "Les McCann: Never Say No Again" reviewed by Chris M. Slawecki

"Be who you are and not who you ain't. Because when you are who you ain't, you're not who you are." Keyboardist, vocalist, bandleader, songwriter and photographer Les McCann really talks like this. About his music, about musicians, about his career--about everything. I learned this during the following interview, scheduled to discuss Omnivore Records' ...
