The career of Israeli guitarist Eyal Maoz, now based in New York, is a schizophrenic one. He releases albums on the Tzadik label with his Radical Jewish quartet Edom (the self-titled, 2005 debut and 2009'sa Hope and Destruction) and takes part in saxophonist John Zorn's ongoing Masada songbook, including 2012's Abraxas: The Book Of Angels, Volume ...

Slivovitz: Bani Ahead

Read "Bani Ahead" reviewed by Dave Wayne

by Dave Wayne
January 6, 2012

Slivovitz--also the generic name for a type of plum brandy popular throughout the Mediterranean--is a fascinating jazz-rock band that's been around for a decade or so. Bani Ahead, its second recording for the MoonJune label and third overall, is a charming blend of jazz and progressive rock with pronounced Balkan and circum-Mediterranean folk influences. Part of ...

Eyal Maoz - Asaf Sirkis: Elementary Dialogues

by AAJ Italy Staff
January 12, 2011

Possiede l'energia del buon vecchio rock, quello verace e ruspante, dove l'esibizione è momento anche di ricerca, di sperimentazione di nuove sonorità e di nuove strategie esecutive. E vi è una spiccata propensione all'improvvisazione, alle continue invenzioni, all'ascolto reciproco per rilanciare sollecitazioni e impulsi ricevuti e creare prospettive diverse all'esecuzione. Questa miscela diventa esplosiva e incendia ...

Eyal Maoz & Edom: Hope and Destruction

Read "Hope and Destruction" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

by AAJ Italy Staff
November 18, 2009

Eyal Maoz's Edom: Hope and Destruction

Read "Hope and Destruction" reviewed by Eyal Hareuveni

by Eyal Hareuveni
October 13, 2009

The second release of New York-based Israeli guitarist Eyal Maoz alt-klezmer quartet Edom is a schizophrenic one. On one hand, Maoz faithfully follows Tzadik founder John Zorn's hybridized post-modern pastiche of klezmer and Jewish musical traditions, and musical references that are typical of the label's Radical Jewish Culture series. This is most audible in the manner ...

Eyal Maoz / Asaf Sirkis: Elementary Dialogues

Read "Elementary Dialogues" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

by Glenn Astarita
October 3, 2009

Tzadik recording artist/guitarist Eyal Maoz teams with U.K.-based drummer/leader of The Inner Noise, Asaf Sirkis. Here, the duo projects style, substance and gobs of variety on these sprightly duets for the avant-garde Swedish record label, Ayler Records. Elementary Dialogues is an album built on cunning improvisation, where the instrumentalists delve into laidback funk-rock, noise-shaping maneuvers and ...
