Shy Mascot

Paul G. Smyth

For the last 20 years, pianist Paul G. Smyth has been carving a unique furrow in
Ireland’s cultural landscape. Parallel to his past involvement with The Jimmy Cake
(described by the Irish Times as “the most powerful musical force in Ireland”), Smyth
has also set himself apart as a singular voice in Europe’s vigorous improvised music
scene.
Since touring with Charles Gayle in 1999, he has worked with such luminaries as Derek
Bailey, Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann, Keiji Haino, Barry Guy, Wadada Leo Smith, John
Russell, Chris Corsano, Lol Coxhill, Charles Hayward, John Butcher, John Edwards, Alan
Wilkinson, Mark Sanders and Damo Suzuki, among many others, been a member of
synth trio Boys Of Summer (“the sound of John Carpenter being buried alive” - Le Cool
Magazine), a featured composer in the National Concert Hall, written music for theatre,
and performed in 18 countries.
Smyth has released critically acclaimed duo albums with Evan Parker, Chris Corsano and
John Russell on his label Weekertoft, which he co-founded with Russell in 2016.

His personal way of understanding music and the passion he implies to his interpretation makes his work a unique listening experience. With a strong blues base and guitarists such as Steve Ray Vaughan, Grant Green or Robben Ford in mind, Jaby leads several blues-fusion projects since 2008 on, which helps him to become a well-known face in Madrid's blues scene. Mathias Baumann

Music can express and evoke feelings that nobody has words for.’ Dublin based guitarist Mathias Baumann is originally from Nassau, Germany and moved to Ireland in 2005. With many years of recording and touring experience in different countries, he has been working as a session guitarist, composer and guitar teacher since 1998. Mathias studied Jazz at Blackrock’s Newpark Music Centre and finished the four- year degree course in May 2013 with an honours degree in ‘Bachelor Of Arts in Jazz Performance’. He has performed and recorded with many artists from different genre, as well as his own groups Mathias Baumann Quartet and Mathias Baumann Group

Michael Buckley
Regarded as the most important and influential musician on the Irish jazz scene, saxophonist / flautist and composer Michael Buckley has been playing professionally since the age of six when critics hailed him as a child prodigy. Born in Dublin city in 1971 Michael first came to prominence on an International level when, aged 10, he played flute with the legendary saxophonist George Coleman in the National Concert Hall. Though largely self-taught, his obvious talent has beendeveloped by his father Dick Buckley, and such legends as Milt Hinton. Buckley has found his ownunique voice playing both on saxophone and flute.

Vocalist and composer Sue Rynhart BA (Mus) MA Mus (Hist) ARIAM. She has premiered works by many of the Composers from the Irish Composers Collective & the Contemporary Music Centre and and has performed on BBC Radio with the Choir of Christchurch Cathedral Dublin. She has been featured extensively on Róisín Ingle's Irish Times podcast 'Róisín meets', The Blue of the Night RTÉ Lyric fm and on Bernard Clarke's award winning radio programme 'Nova' on RTÉ Lyric fm. Sue has performed her music at many festivals such as the Manchester Jazz Festival, Electric Picnic, Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, Drogheda Arts Festival, Bray Jazz Festival, Waterford New Music Week, Liverpool Irish Festival at the Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room, Liverpool Three Festival Tall Ships Regatta, Jazzy Colors Festival Paris and in the Main auditorium in the National Concert Hall Dublin for the Perspectives Jazz festival as a support act for the late ECM Trumpeter Tomasz Stanko.

Leopoldo Osio
Born:
Jazz Pianist Leopoldo Osio was born in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela. He started playing piano at a very early age, inspired by Venezuelan Traditional Music. He credits George Shearing as being the first musician that got him hooked on jazz when he was 14 years old. Around this time, Leo began studying with jazz musician and promoter Ivo Farfan, who introduced him to jazz trumpet player Julio Mendoza who was to become his principal mentor and develop his interest in bebop. Leo immersed himself in the music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gilliespie, Chucho Valdes and Paquito de Rivera. At the age of 16, he was invited to perform in the Festival de Jazz en el Orinoco with important Venezuelan musicians like Ivo Farfan, Victor Cuica, Roberto Giron, and later the same year The Jazz Festival El Hatillo with Julio Mendoza Quartet. His interest in music led him to study at several universities in 3 countries to improve his knowledge in different areas of the music, including Jazz and Latin Music at IUDEM-Venezuela, Brazilian Music at Conservatory Souza Lima-Brazil and Newpark Music Centre where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Performance (Hons) in 2010
