Mathias Baumann

‘Music is the language that everybody understands. Music can express and evoke feelings that nobody has words for.’ Dublin based guitarist Mathias Baumann is originally from Nassau, Germany and moved to Ireland in 2005.

With many years of recording and touring experience in different countries, he has been working as a session guitarist, composer and guitar teacher since 1998.

Mathias studied Jazz at Blackrock’s Newpark Music Centre and finished the four- year degree course in May 2013 with an honours degree in ‘Bachelor Of Arts in Jazz Performance’.

He has performed and recorded with many artists from different genre, as well as his own groups Mathias Baumann Quartet and Mathias Baumann Group.

His composition 'Avoidable Inevitability' was exhibited at 'Group Ego Trip 1', a multidisciplinary art exhibition in the New York Foundation for the Arts Gallery in Brooklyn in 2013/2014.

In late 2014 he released the Jazz album 'Expectations' with his quartet.

From January 2015 on, he has been working on a global multidisciplinary and intercultural art project 'The World Is Coming Together' which will feature some of his original orchestral and contemporary Jazz compositions.

Although he has played with many bands and in various musical genre, Mathias has always favoured playing and writing original music and started composing at a very young age. As a composer he always searches for new harmonic and rhythmic textures with interesting melodic movement and powerful grooves. His extended compositions and arrangements are complimented by open improvisations so that interaction between the band members always drives his music to new horizons.

Matt brings his diverse musical tastes to his lessons, I found myself playing Jazz, Rock and blues and searching for diverse pieces to learn. Matt has an amazing knowledge of theory and he is very generous with his time imparting that knowledge. (Joe S.) The great thing about lessons with Matt is the commitment he has. He really makes practicing very enjoyable. I also love the versatility that Matt brings to the lessons. I have yet to find any style that he can't teach to a very high level. Matt's enthusiasm and positive teaching style makes the lessons a wonderful experience and really inspires me to be a better guitar player. (Finn R.) My son always enjoyed his classes with Matt and found him a really knowledgable teacher. (Elizabeth M.)
