Pianist/Composer Luke Celenza to Release Debut Album, Back and Forth, Featuring 12 Original Compositions Bridging the Gap Between Jazz and Pop
“I hear in Luke Celenza a young gifted jazz musician who has the right inquisitive attitude and true potential to become one of the key players in the scene. He brings to the table a fresh sound and an uncommon restrained maturity in his music which I am sure will keep on delighting us for many ...
Composer/Saxophonist Joshua Kwassman Spins the Tale of Friendship on Songs of the Brother Spirit - His Debut Album of All Original Extended Compositions, Available March 12 on Truth Revolution Records
Featuring Guitarist Gilad Hekselman The journey from adolescence to adulthood can be a harrowing one. For composer and saxophonist Joshua Kwassman, that was true in a very literal sense, as a three-day bike trip, in August 2010, with an idolized childhood friend collapsed into chaos and shattered his youthful illusions. While that trek itself found Kwassman ...
Pianist Aaron Diehl to Make Mack Avenue Records and Studio Debut with Captivating New Album, the Bespoke Man's Narrative, Available March 19
In fashion circles, the adjective “bespoke” denotes custom-made suits and shirts and signifies the person who designs and constructs them. On The Bespoke Man’s Narrative, his brilliant Mack Avenue Records debut, pianist Aaron Diehl extrapolates this notion to matters of musical invention. “The idea for the metaphor was that the composition and concept were specifically for ...

Rudresh Mahanthappa: Gamak
by Mark Corroto
Did saxophonist John Coltrane have any idea of the consequence of dipping his toes into the music of India in the 1960s? Not only did he introduce jazz to new harmonic structures, but he marshaled the forces of jazz, perhaps, to ingurgitate world music. While the repercussions of Coltrane's spiritual journey are still being felt, what ...

by Larry Taylor
The Clayton Brothers--John on bass and Jeff on reeds--have been playing together for over 30 years, either in their small groups or in the large Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, formed in 1985 in partnership with drummer Jeff Hamilton. In small contexts, they have specialized in post-bop swing with a touch of funk, while the critically acclaimed big ...
Rudresh Mahanthappa: Gamak
by Mark F. Turner
Alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa continues to avoid stereotypes, whether pushing the envelope with his acoustic ensembles or including electronic colorations in 2011's Samdhi (ACT). With Gamak, his unique blend of progressive jazz and Indian music is still evolving. The added twist here is not only a reunion with the magnificent rhythm section of bassist Francois Moutin ...

Naked Truth: Ouroboros
by Jeff Dayton-Johnson
With apologies to the late guitarist Pete Cosey (who led a band by the name), the members of Naked Truth are bona fide “children of Agharta." That is, the group--led by bassist-guitarist Lorenzo Feliciati--has absorbed and adapted the lessons of trumpeter Miles Davis's exhausting, tectonic live recording Agharta (Columbia, 1975) so well that Davis' disc can ...
