Daniel Dickinson

Born:

Daniel Dickinson, an up-and-coming talent from Jacksonville, FL, has been musically minded since his childhood. Having been raised in a musical family and given the blessings of a musically fruitful upbringing in Lavilla School of the Arts and Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, his gifts have always pushed him forward to new, big ideas. Within the last few years, however, his advancement has taken off with unprecedented ferocity, which he will tell you is due to the tremendous teaching he has received from such world class musicians as Lynne Arriale, Todd Del Giudice, and Bunky Greene. Daniel's skills in composition, arranging, and performance on the clarinet, flute, and saxophone in both classical and jazz idioms have awarded him numerous honors from organizations at the local, state, and national level

Ulysses Owens Jr. Big Band: Soul Conversations

Read "Soul Conversations" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.'s Big Band comes out swinging on its debut recording, Soul Conversations, thundering through Michael Dease's incendiary arrangement of the Dizzy Gillespie/John Lewis flame-thrower, “Two Bass Hit." For more such heat, however, the listener must move forward to Track 5, John Coltrane's impulsive “Giant Steps," thence to Track 9 for Charles Turner III's ...

Daniel Dickinson: A Gathering Foretold

Read "A Gathering Foretold" reviewed by Geannine Reid

It's hard to picture Dickinson as a debut artist, with a cast of characters that range from; Christian Sands, Michael Dease, Ulysses Owens, Jr., featured on A Gathering Foretold. Altoist Daniel Dickinson should not be overlooked as another side player ponying up for the known players, on whatever recording of the moment that seems to be ...

Mica Bethea: Stage 'N Studio

Read "Stage 'N Studio" reviewed by Jack Bowers

When listening to the Mica Bethea Big Band's generally admirable two-CD set, Stage 'n Studio, the first thought is, “Why hasn't anyone done this before?" That query is immediately replaced by a second thought: “Perhaps someone has and we simply overlooked it." In either case, Bethea's decision to perform (basically) the same material in a recording ...

The Mica Bethea Big Band: Stage 'N Studio

Read "Stage 'N Studio" reviewed by Jerome Wilson

A young composer from Jacksonville, Florida, Mica Bethea shows an impressive command of big band writing and arranging on this set. Traces of all the usual modern large ensemble influences can be heard in his work, but he also brings his own ideas to the table and creates something fresh and energetic. This is ...

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
