Daniel Dickinson

Daniel Dickinson, an up-and-coming talent from Jacksonville, FL, has been musically minded since his childhood. Having been raised in a musical family and given the blessings of a musically fruitful upbringing in Lavilla School of the Arts and Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, his gifts have always pushed him forward to new, big ideas. Within the last few years, however, his advancement has taken off with unprecedented ferocity, which he will tell you is due to the tremendous teaching he has received from such world class musicians as Lynne Arriale, Todd Del Giudice, and Bunky Greene. Daniel's skills in composition, arranging, and performance on the clarinet, flute, and saxophone in both classical and jazz idioms have awarded him numerous honors from organizations at the local, state, and national level. These include the 2011 outstanding soloist award from Downbeat magazine and the Jeep McCoy scholarship from the North East Florida Jazz Association, to name a few. Daniel has also written many pieces including one premiered at the JEN convention and recorded by a group lead by Ulysses Owens, Jr. for his album, “Onward & Upward”.

Daniel has also performed with artists such as the Jacksonville Symphony, The Savannah Philharmonic, Ben Folds, Jennifer Holliday, The Spinners, and many others. He is also a member The Mica Bethea Big Band, based in Jacksonville.

Daniel is currently working on an undergraduate double major in jazz studies on the saxophone and clarinet performance at the University of North Florida, where he has studied with Bunky Green, Todd Del Giudice, Lynne Arriale, Sunshine Simmons, and Guy Yehuda.

Daniel was accepted to and performed with the 2014 Disney All-American College Band presented by Yamaha, for which he was selected from a large number of musicians auditioning from all around the country, covering all degree levels, to form a 21-member band.

Daniel has recently recorded his jazz debut album, featuring his original compositions as well as two guest compositions by Michael Dease and Christian Sans, and produced by Ulysses Owens, Jr. Featured in the line-up are:

Joshua Bowlus; Christian Sands(Piano), Ulysses Owens, Jr.(Drums), Reuben Rogers(Bass), Barry Greene(Guitar), Michael Dease(Trombone), Juan Rollan(Tenor Sax), Alphonso Horne(Trumpet), and Mercedes Beckman(Bari Sax).

Daniel's latest project was playing and arranging for a new album by an amazing vocalist and renowned Broadway performer named Carter Calvert, entitled, "It's a Man's World". Also produced by Ulysses Owens, Jr., The album features a host of famed instrumentalists and arrangers, such as Laurence Hobgood, Ben Williams, David Rosenthal, Marco Panascia, and Joel Frahm.

Ulysses Owens Jr. Big Band: Soul Conversations

Read "Soul Conversations" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.'s Big Band comes out swinging on its debut recording, Soul Conversations, thundering through Michael Dease's incendiary arrangement of the Dizzy Gillespie/John Lewis flame-thrower, “Two Bass Hit." For more such heat, however, the listener must move forward to Track 5, John Coltrane's impulsive “Giant Steps," thence to Track 9 for Charles Turner III's earnest homage to “Harlem Harlem Harlem," on which he doubles as vocalist. That's not to say that everything in between is ...

Daniel Dickinson: A Gathering Foretold

Read "A Gathering Foretold" reviewed by Geannine Reid

It's hard to picture Dickinson as a debut artist, with a cast of characters that range from; Christian Sands, Michael Dease, Ulysses Owens, Jr., featured on A Gathering Foretold. Altoist Daniel Dickinson should not be overlooked as another side player ponying up for the known players, on whatever recording of the moment that seems to be permeating the jazz genre as of late. Dickinson himself was recognized early on as a prodigy by his teachers and already can be heard ...
