James Emery

Co-founder of the chamber ensemble The String Trio of New York, virtuoso guitarist and composer James Emery has received international recognition for his distinctive and highly original approach to both improvisation and composition.  Utilizing a full range of musical information, his sensibility draws in nearly equal measures upon formal notions of structure and technique and a robust willingness to improvise, experiment, and follow his musical knowledge – both as composer and player.

Artistic Director of the highly accomplished Sound Directions, Inc., James has been active as performer, oft-commissioned composer and inspiring educator on the international jazz and contemporary music scene since 1975, with over two dozen CDs as a leader or co-leader and live performances in more than 25 countries worldwide. His recordings have been described as “innovative and imaginative” and “utterly distinctive” by the Penguin Guide to Jazz, which selected his orchestral recording, Transformations for its edition titled "The History of Jazz in the 1001 Best Albums." He has received international critical acclaim for his work leading various ensemble formations of jazz and creative music, particularly the String Trio of New York which is entering its fifth decade in 2019.

Aaron Dolman

Born:

Aaron Dolman (he/him) is a drummer, composer and bandleader born and based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal who has emerged as a distinct and imaginative voice in the city's creative music scene.

Aaron leads the unique trio, Aaron Dolman's Here to Help, in which he is joined by two vocalists: Sarah Rossy and Eugénie Jobin. The group's first album, Are You Here to Help?, was released in March of 2022 and premiered with a concert at the OFF Festival de Jazz de Montréal for which the group won the François-Marcaurelle Award. The album is a journey into the primordially evocative quality of drums and the human voice—brought into sharp focus by the group’s strikingly minimalistic instrumentation.  Aaron’s compositions and lyrics blur the line between notated and improvised music, and probe the expressive power of giving and taking Space. In his own words: “This is music about Space. The space between each note, each word, each breath. Between what was, what is, and what could be. The gentle potency of silence. This is music about the spaces that hold the ones we love and that are left empty when they are lost.” LISTEN to the album or WATCH the album trailer to learn more about the project. The group's EPK can be found HERE.

Ineke Vandoorn & Marc van Vugt

Ineke Vandoorn & Marc van Vugt With fairy-like sounds, funky arrangements, modern music full of harrowing and twisting harmonies and sadly comforting songs, singer/pianist Ineke Vandoorn and her partner in music composer/guitarist Marc van Vugt explore boundaries in an admirable and fascinating way: between improvisation and composition, in original songs with regular lyrics and in pure improvisations, by giving their characteristic interpretation of standards or by amalgation of different musical expressions. In the intimacy of a duo, trio or quartet, and with surprising and original crossovers with a chamber choir or a full orchestra, Like the Dutch Metropole Orchestra or the Dutch Chamber choir
