StLJN Saturday Video Showcase: Six St. Louis saxophonists you should know
When talk turns to saxophonists from St. Louis, many knowledgeable music fans will associate our city with David Sanborn and World Saxophone Quartet founding members Hamiet Bluiett, Oliver Lake and Julius Hemphill. Sanborn, Bluiett, and Lake all grew up in this area, and Hemphill, though not a native, made an important contribution to the Black Artists ...

The music is decidedly modern with a taste of the Brazilian and Indian musical influences. Originally from Cincinnati, OH, Hartman moved to London, UK in 2011 ...
Charlie Haden / Liberation Music Orchestra: Time/Life:Songs For The Whales And Other Beings
by Ian Patterson
Formed by bassist Charlie Haden in 1969 to protest America's war in Vietnam/Indochina, the Liberation Music Orchestra has reconvened roughly every ten years to record musical protest in the face of major injustices. Jakob Baekgaard's Best Releases Of 2016
by Jakob Baekgaard
The world seems more uncertain than ever before, but in times of uncertainty, music provides comfort and a hope that it is actually possible to communicate across borders, whether they be physical or psychological. Among the releases that caught my attention this year, the one that meant most to me by far is ...
Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra: Time / Life
by Giuseppe Segala
Beekman: Vol. 02
by Dave Wayne
Beekman is a super-tight collective quartet whose members hail from three (count 'em) different continents. Pianist Yago Vazquez is from Spain, reedman Kyle Nasser is an American, and the entire rhythm section--bassist Pablo Menares and drummer Rodrigo Recabarren--hails from Chile. Their prosaically-titled sophomore album, Vol. 02, is more-or-less in the same brainy-but-chill modern jazz style as ...
