Brian Groder Trio: Luminous Arcs

Read "Luminous Arcs" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Sebastien Ammann’s Color Wheel, Kenny Warren Trio and More

Read "Sebastien Ammann’s Color Wheel, Kenny Warren Trio and More" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

I doubt you would get much argument that trumpet players Herb Robertson and Dave Ballou, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Tom Rainey are among the finest of their generation. When Robertson and Ballou decided to form a quartet back in 2005, those four musical minds coming together pretty much assured some magic would happen. In 2007 ...

There are several new albums sampled in this episode, beginning with a pair of bands from Toronto--bassist Pete Johnston's See Through 4 which features pianist Marilyn Lerner, and drummer Ernesto Cervini's quartet. Avant-garde collaborators Alexander Von Schlippenbach and Dag Magnus Narvesen reunited for another duo session of very out-there explorations on Liminal Field. Revisiting his past ...

Kirk Knuffke, Charles Lloyd, FIDOqrtet and More

Read "Kirk Knuffke, Charles Lloyd, FIDOqrtet and More" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

This episode has several excellent contemporary trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn players scattered throughout the playlist: players like Brian Groder (new recording Luminous Arcs ), Dan Rosenboom, Kirk Knuffke, Nate Wooley (with Harris Eisenstadt), Ron Horton and Rob Mazurek (Chicago Underground Quartet). Those horns are staples of big bands too, so you'll hear plenty in the music from Sweden's Maluba ...

Musician

Brian Groder

Brian Groder is rapidly becoming known as one of the most original jazz voices of his generation. Equally fluent on trumpet and flugelhorn, Groder draws on the entire jazz tradition, as well as world music influences, to create the music Cadence magazine has hailed as "tender and well delivered, with subtle and unexpected rhythmic responses." Groder's preference for working with other composer/performers gives his brand of modern progressive jazz unique improvisatory richness and depth. For performances and recordings of the Brian Groder Ensemble, founded in the early 1990's, Groder chooses from a pool of talented musicians, including core members Francesca Tanksley, acclaimed pianist and composer (Billy Harper Quintet, Erica Lindsay, David Newman, Cecil Payne), and percussionist, composer and solo artist Newman Taylor Baker (Benny Powell, Ahmad Jamal, Dewey Redman, Henry Threadgill)

Brian Groder Trio: R Train On The D Line

Read "R Train On The D Line" reviewed by Mark Corroto

An album like R Train On The D Line is what separates jazz listeners from non-jazz listeners. The Brian Groder Trio plays the kind of composed yet improvised music that portends to go off the rails at any time, yet never does. And that may be the true definition of jazz. Consider the audiences' ...

Brian Groder Trio: R Train On The D Line

A New York City jazz scene regular, the trumpeter and flugelhorn player Brian Groder returns with the trio that helped make Reflexology (Latham Records, 2014) such a highly satisfying recording. Bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Jay Rosen are well-suited to supporting Groder's flexible, energetic and probing objectives. Following their previous work together, their mutual empathy of ...
