Darryl Alexander Sr.

Chances are that if you have listened to Saturday Night Live, Good Morning America, The Weather Channel, E Entertainment, Lifetime, Fox Business, Maury Povich, or listened to music while flying, you have heard music by jazz artist/producer Darryl Alexander. His dream growing up was to be a professional baseball player and would lead to scholarship offers from numerous universities, including Boston and Capital University.

At Kent State University, Darryl dropped his pursuit of baseball and became a member of a band which featured “In Living Color” and “Comedy.TV” comedian AJ Jamal on keys.

Born: July 30, 1941

Rosinha de Valença was an influential Brazilian guitarist who made significant contributions to bossa nova and samba music. Born Rosa Maria de Souza in Valença, Rio de Janeiro in 1941, she rose to prominence in the 1960s during the bossa nova movement in Brazil.

She was known for her exceptional technical skill and unique fingerstyle guitar playing. Unlike many female musicians of her era who were primarily vocalists, Rosinha established herself as an instrumentalist in a male-dominated field. Her playing style combined traditional Brazilian rhythms with jazz influences.

Marla Lewis

Born: June 2, 1950

Marla Lewis, New Jersey-born singer/songwriter, grew up listening to Ella Fitzgerald, big band, folk music from around the world, the Beatles, Laura Nyro, Carole King, James Taylor, Michael Franks, and Phoebe Snow, to name a few.  For 25 years as an elementary school teacher, she began writing educational and fun songs for children. One of them, "Leap of Faith," co-written with Nancy Schimmel, appeared on a Grammy-winning children's album in 2011, entitled, ALL ABOUT BULLIES...BIG AND SMALL.  

Marla has just released a new single, TE QUIERO A TI, both in English and in Spanish, on May 23, 2024. Independentartistbuzz.com says,” TE QUIERO A TI has an irresistible groove and ambiance and beautiful vocals from Marla Lewis. The sophisticated arrangement features flute, piano, acoustic bass, electric guitar, drums, and rich backing vocals."  Think Bossa!

Carlos Pingarilho

Born: January 7, 1940

Brazilian composer, singer and guitarist, born on January 7, 1940 in Rio de Janeiro, RJ. He co-wrote many songs with poet Marcos Vasconcellos, his most frequent partner, as well as with his cousin Marcos Valle; among them, Seu Encanto (The Face I Love) and Dorme Profundo. Pingarilho's songs have been recorded by the likes of João Gilberto, Luiz Bonfá, Elis Regina, Eumir Deodato, Andy Williams, Sarah Vaughan, Sylvia Telles, Laurindo Almeida, Joyce, Chris Montez, Leny Andrade, Kenny Barron, Joanne Brackeen, Ithamara Koorax, and most recently Gretchen Parlato on her 2024 Grammy-nominee album Lean In.
Altough active as a composer since 1963, when Marcos Valle recorded Canção Pequenina, Pingarilho only did his first recording session ever in 1998, invited by producer Arnaldo DeSouteiro to play on Dom Um Romao's Rhythm Traveller album. His debut album as a leader, Histórias E Sonhos (Stories And Dreams) came out only in 2002, for DeSouteiro's JSR label, featuring an stellar cast: Eumir Deodato, Ithamara Koorax, Marcos Valle, Dom Um Romao, Gaudencio Thiago de Mello, Bebeto Castilho (Tamba Trio), Marcelo Salazar, Jorge Pescara, Sergio Barroso and many others.
