Spinifex

Spinifex explores the contrast between extremely tight irregular structures and extensive free improvisations. With its fearsomely explosive combination of musicians, Spinifex is all about compelling grooves, strong dynamics and challenging improvisations.

Named after a tough Australian species of grass, Spinifex may at first sound like a combination of jazzcore, math-metal and other typically Western contemporary music. However, beneath the surface the listener will discover ancient cyclical rhythms of Turkish and Indian origin.

Zandscape

Zandscape – 2 dictionary results: Zand·scape [Zand-skeyp] noun, 1. a musical landscape created by Mark Zandveld. 2. a band playing the creations mentioned above. While it might be perceived as a gimmick, the dictionary entry actually gets to the heart of the band’s aesthetic. It points out that it relies on Mark Zandveld’s distinctive composing skills, but also that the music is conceived through collective playing and not only one man’s vision. Finally, there’s a great deal of humor and creativity involved, and this is also shown in titles like “Barhopping,” “Boptopus” and “What a Difference the Bass Makes.” Clearly, these guys like to play together, but make no mistake, behind the smile there’s also a stone-cold seriousness and an ambition to create an expression that is both musically curious and singular. Jakob Baekgaard – All About Jazz …and who am I to argue? After having been a bassist for decades, a fresh wind of inspiration led me to writing batch of compositions that you can find on Zandscape’s first CD. Some of the pieces are written in the most common way jazz tunes are: in the form of a chord progression with a melody

Heleen van den Hombergh

Born:

Heleen has received many great reviews as a singer and composer. Her professional singing career began when piano miracle Bert van den Brink heard Heleen’s voice in 2000 and spoke of “love on first hearing” . With him, bass player Tony Overwater and percussionist Joshua Samson she recorded two albums and a live recorded DVD and performed at the North Sea Jazz festival,  Concertgebouw, BIMhuis, and many other fine stages in the Netherlands and abroad.

Heleen's first album Heard in the Scene (2002) mainly consisted of jazz & soul repertoire. For her second album and theatre tour with the same band, under the title Rush in the Woods! (2004), Heleen's long-standing passion for tropical forests inspired the lyrics and compositions, all originals.  With a new team, consisting of Jeroen Vierdag (bass), Erik Rutjes (guitar), Karel Boehlee (piano) and Bart Fermie (percussion) she recorded Way Back Home (2011) a musical tribute to life, despite all loss and longing.
