Achim Kaufmann

Achim Kaufmann (piano, composer, electronics) was born in Aachen, Germany, and has been living in Amsterdam since 1996. He is involved in a number of different projects, some of them all improvised, some of them featuring his own compositions: His gueuledeloup quartet (with Michael Moore, John Hollenbeck, Henning Sieverts) "melds elements of the free zone with tenderly executed dreamscape type passages" (allaboutjazz) Their two CDs, Gueuledeloup (Red Toucan, 2002) and Double Exposure (Leo, 2000) have been called "models of some of the finest forward-thinking chamber jazz coming out of Europe today." The improvising trio of Achim Kaufmann, Frank Gratkowski and Wilbert de Joode has released two discs so far (on Konnex and on nuscope) and is currently preparing their third release of energetic, multi-layered improvised chamber music. Trio Kamosc (with Michael Moore and Dylan van der Schyff) is another group that mixes composition and improvisation in unique ways, including "blatantly traditional" materials that are treated as found objects. Achim currently works on repertoires for different piano trios which he will record during the course of the year. Besides, he has written music for string quartet and works as a solo performer
Robert Landfermann: Topaz

by Don Phipps
A brilliant tour de force, Robert Landfermann's Topaz is helped in no small part by the amazing contributions of the quartet Landfermann assembled for this session. It is clear he prefers spontaneous improvisation over formal structures. The key to such an approach relies on the ability of the musicians to both listen to one another and ...

Martin Blume / Tobias Delius / Achim Kaufmann / Dieter Manderscheid: Frames & Terrains

by John Sharpe
Previous collaborations between British-born (though to an Argentinean father and a German mother) reedman Tobias Delius and German pianist Achim Kaufmann include appearances in drummer Christian Lillinger's Grund and in the European version of NYC singer Fay Victor's Herbie Nichols project, so their pairing as part of a co-operative quartet on Frames & Terrains is not ...

by Enrico Bettinello
Since the first half of the 20th century, the Old Continent has played a pivotal role both in welcoming and supporting jazz artists from the United States. Over the following decades it has expressed generations of passionate musicians with increasingly original languages and ever greater improvisatory skills. In the 21st century there are countless ...

by Phillip Woolever
Christian Lillinger's Grund Cologne Philharmonic Cologne, Germany March 18, 2017 Many German cities can boast of a vibrant jazz scene. Cologne is one of the most dynamic of them all, with a widespread foundation of educational institutions, popular clubs and broadcasting. Olie Brice / Achim Kaufmann: Of Tides

by John Eyles
Recorded live at The Vortex in December 2014, Of Tides combines London double bassist Olie Brice and German pianist Achim Kaufmann in a duo. Bass and piano is an uncommon combination for a twosome, this one having arisen after the pair initially combined in a trio that also included Roger Turner on percussion. Potential obstacles to ...
Achim Kaufmann, Frank Gratkowski, Wilbert de Joode: Oblengths

by Giuseppe Segala
"L'improvvisazione collettiva è una disciplina che richiede buone orecchie, tempo di reazione immediato e abbondanti qualità musicali." Riportiamo volentieri le parole usate da Kevin Whitehead nel breve saggio che accompagna questo CD, per la loro eloquente intensità. Aggiungiamo che l'ascolto dell'improvvisazione collettiva si avvicina a tale disciplina: prevede buone orecchie, disposizione ad entrare senza timore in ...
Thomas Heberer, Achim Kaufmann: Knoten

by Alberto Bazzurro
Inciso a Berlino a fine 2011, Knoten ci ripropone uno dei musicisti più interessanti della nuova scena jazzistica europea, Thomas Heberer, qui in duo col piano (anche preparato) di Achim Kaufmann, magari poco noto dalle nostre parti, ma che vanta pur sempre collaborazioni con Han Bennink, Mark Dresser, George Lewis, Steve Swallow, Paul Rutherford, Tomász Stanko, ...
