Helge Lien Trio - "Hello Troll"

December 22, 2011

OVERVIEW: As a jazz enthusiast, I take pride in recommending albums to my friends that I believe they'll enjoy. The more finicky they are (yes Dan, that's directed at you), the more I delight in suggesting something that they can't stop raving about. Recently on one of the music forums I peruse, a member I've never ...

Monthly Classic - Lester Young and the Oscar Peterson Trio

December 22, 2011

OVERVIEW: Welcome to the initial edition of “Monthly Classic!" It's a pretty straight-forward concept; since the majority of reviews on JazzJunkie focus on contemporary artists, this monthly installment will look at some well deserving albums from the yesteryear. The reviews will be closer to the standard review format (i.e. pithy with no detailed track analysis). Easy ...

December 22, 2011

OVERVIEW: When it comes to music, I'm all about the mood. Thankfully, the career I have allows me to listen to music almost all day long—and not softly from computer speakers or a radio; I use a set of Shure SRH840 professional studio monitoring headphones which provide great detail, instrument separation, and a level of isolation ...

4 New Soul Favorites + 6 More

December 21, 2011

If you follow the music press, you've probably read that soul is dying. The line goes something like this: Rap, house, hip-hop, pop and other bouncy forms have made soul and funk less relevant today. But based on what has been crossing my desk, I tend to disagree. What I am noticing is that there's much ...

Where's Nicholas Payton Coming From?

December 21, 2011

Trumpeter, and erstwhile vocalist/one-man-band, raconteur/social commentator (at least based on his latest release Bitches on the IN + OUT label, which would appear to be the latest advance in his Sonic Trance odyssey) Nicholas Payton has been raising a literal firestorm of conjecture and debate with his recent series of blog posts, Twitter and Facebook rejoinders. ...

Darren Johnston's Gone to Chicago - The Big Lift (2011)

December 21, 2011

As I write this, the power fails at San Francisco's Candlestick Park just prior to kickoff of the Niners/Steelers Monday night football game. But as I am also listening to Frisco-based trumpeter Darren Johnston, I'm hearing lights-out music. Canadian-born Johnston found fertile musical ground in the Bay Area, but trips out to gigs in Chicago engendered ...
