Interview: Marcos Valle
I'm a huge fan of Marcos Valle's music. Who isn't? If you love Samba de Verão—known in the U.S. as Summer Samba (So Nice)—then you know what I'm talking about. As soon as I heard Marcos was going to be making a rare New York appearance at Birdland May 27-31 with the legendary Roberto Menescal, I ...
Don't Ignore Your Email List, Say Fan Engagement Experts
First they told you to build your fanbase on Facebook. Then Facebook changed its timeline rules. Next they told you to engage on Twitter. But its hard to get noticed in a stream of continuous updates and their user growth is slowing. While social media is still essential, it turns out that good old fashioned email ...
Enter the Haggis Compares Crowdfunding Experiences on Multiple Platforms
Brian Buchanan of Enter The Haggis recently shared his thoughts on crowdfunding via Bandzoogle's blog. He gives a lot of solid crowdfunding advice while taking a look at their differing experiences using Kickstarter, PledgeMusic and Bandzoogle (to run a DIY crowdfunding campaign). I was surprised to find more evidence of Kickstarter losing its leading position but, ...
Jazz This Week: Jane Monheit, Miles Davis Jazz Festival with Russell Gunn, New Music Circle Showcase, Tammy McCann, and More
This week's menu of jazz and creative music offerings in St. Louis includes a number of special events, most notably the annual Miles Davis Jazz Festival in Alton, plus the long-awaited return of one of the more popular female vocalists in jazz. That would be singer Jane Monheit, who's back in St. Louis to perform in ...
Stockholm Sweetnin': Surreal Sirens
Earlier in the week I was doing some research and stumbled on what has to be the oddest version of Quincy Jones's Stockholm Sweetnin'. It features two singers, Kersti Johanson and Marje Aare—and that's about all I know, except in the video clip they appear to be at the museum at night, almost in a dream ...

Shazam has landed investments from the world's 3 largest label groups, Universal Music, Sony Music and Warner Music have each invested $3 million in the music and audio identification app. Shazam is currently valued at $500 million, making their collective stake less than 2%. Music tech investments by the big three music groups, who are hoping ...
International Songwriting Competition Awards Grand Prize to Jazz Trumpeter Shunzo Ohno
The International Songwriting Competition has awarded its 2014 Grand Prize to jazz trumpeter Shunzo Ohno. Ohno has been described as modest and seemingly shy, and he has overcome health challenges in his life that would have potentially ended any musician's career. Surviving both a serious car accident in which his teeth and lips were permanently damaged ...
Remembering Joe Wilder
Joe Wilder, admired for his trumpet tone, range, stylistic flexibility and for his elegance as a musician and person, is gone. Wilder died at the age of 92 last Friday in New York. Despite his modesty and disinclination to assert himself, his skill put him in demand by big band leaders including Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, ...
Sylvia Telles: Bossa Tragedy
Sylvia Telles is my favorite female bossa nova vocalist. In 1961 she was the first Brazilian bossa nova artist to record songs in both English and Portuguese, setting a high bar for bossa nova singers who followed. Telles was on the rise when she was killed in an auto accident in Brazil in December 1966. Signed ...
