Il chitarrista Reinier Baas ed il sassofonista Ben van Gelder pur essendo ancora in giovane età (trentatré anni il primo, trenta il secondo) vantano già diversi riconoscimenti internazionali, numerose collaborazioni prestigiose, e un'intensa attività concertistica che solo nell'ultimo anno li ha visti condividere il palco oltre duecento volte (tra le quali le apprezzate esibizioni allo Young Jazz Festival di Foligno e alla Sala Vanni di Firenze).

I brani presenti in Smash Hits—già presenti in altra veste nei precedenti album di Baas—provengono da due concerti tenuti ad Amsterdam nel 2016 e Utrecht nel 2017 e vedono Baas e van Gelder affiancati dalla prestigiosa Metropole Orkest, pluripremiata, storica formazione, che combina la strumentazione di una big band di stampo jazzistico con quella di un'orchestra sinfonica, per un totale di oltre cinquanta elementi.

Naturale che il punto nevralgico di un simile approccio diventino gli arrangiamenti che si rivelano all'altezza sia nei brani oltre i dieci minuti quali ”Stuiter”, ”Silver/Grey”, ”Palace” che in quelli di minor minutaggio. Nei primi le potenzialità del pieno organico vengono esaltate da un continuo gioco di contrappunti, da masse sonore che si muovono con grande agilità, da cambi di umore e di ritmo che ne alleggeriscono l'ingombro. Nei secondi sono i contrasti timbrici a prevalere, le invenzioni fulminanti, i momenti di introspezione, i riff contagiosi.

Sotto un'apparente veste mainstream dai velati ammiccamenti third stream quella contenuta in Smash Hits è musica dal forte impatto—non solo per la potenza sprigionata—mossa e imprevedibile. Caratterizzata da atmosfere cangianti e da molteplici suggestioni, flirta con vari generi senza eccedere nell'uno o nell'altro, sa essere epica e allo stesso tempo ricca di humor, cinematografica, sostenuta da anomali groove. Splendidamente anomala la chiusura con ”The Dramatic Demise of Princess Discombobulatrix”, quasi sette minuti misteriosi, oscuri che aprono gradualmente a mondi nei quali è bello perdersi.
