Cynthia Hilts: Second Story Breeze
Canta con grazia e ricercatezza, Cynthia Hilts, sostenuta da ottime doti strumentali e compositive.

Originaria dell'Arizona ma attiva a New York da due decenni, ha svolto molte e variegate esperienze (dal reggae al blues, fino all'avanguardia) e oggi approda al secondo disco, - pubblicato dall'etichetta - a capo di un classico piano trio.

Con due strumentisti di prim'ordine quali il bassista Ron McClure e il batterista Jeff Williams, la formazione si muove con raffinata discrezione, ricco gusto melodico e viva tensione ritmica, come testimoniano brani unicamente strumentali come "Nun Miffdemeanor-Like" o "Three Blind Mice".

La Hilts evidenzia un pianismo armonicamente raffinato e ritmicamente brillante, aderente in pieno ai modelli del modern mainstream.

In veste di cantante la Hilts sfrutta al meglio mezzi vocali modesti (e un chiarore timbrico che ricorda Helen Merrill), in un canto che si adagia pigramente nel parlato, rimodellando la melodia con una sofisticata - anche se un po' fredda - ricerca di colori ed atmosfere.

Il brano più riuscito è il tradizionale "The Fading Blue," una poetica ninna-nanna dall'atmosfera sospesa ed evanescente.
