Rudresh Mahanthappa: Samdhi
Col tempo Mahanthappa ha mantenuto quelle promesse: è diventato un nuovo talento e poi si è trasformato in uno dei più accreditati musicisti jazz come certifica la messe di premi che ha raccolto negli ultimi due anni (tra cui il Down Beat Critics Poll 2011 come miglior contraltista).
Ascoltando questo suo esordio per la ACT, si hanno innanzitutto delle conferme: Mahanthappa è un musicista con un carattere ben delineato grazie a un suono robusto e crepitante e a quell'inconfondibile fraseggio orientaleggiante, inoltre gli va riconosciuta una visione musicale matura. Il cocktail di Mahathappa comprende una buona dose di tempi irregolari su cui si innalzano funambolismi ritmici e melodie tipici della musica indiana, elettronica e strutture armoniche e ritmiche mutuate dalla tradizione carnatica.
Il lavoro è reso decisamente originale anche dalle più diverse soluzioni a cui approdano i brani e da alcuni brevi stralci in cui l'uso del laptop sbalza in primo piano e che potrebbero rimandare alle ultime tendenze del jazz nordeuropeo ("Parakram # 1") o alla vena sperimentale inglese e europea degli ultimi trent'anni ("Meeting of the Skins").
Sull'altro piatto della bilancia c' è una certa freddezza e il ricordo della più stereotipata fusion americana che rimbomba qui e lì come uno spettro del passato
