Marcus Miller: Renaissance
Lo stile inconfondibile di Miller pervade l'intera registrazione, caratterizzando introduzioni e melodie, strofe di passaggio e primi piani, ma anche il resto della band partecipa in maniera attiva all'intelaiatura espressiva di quest'album. Il riferimento è in particolar modo diretto all'altoista Alex Han, al quale sono affidati molti compiti d'importanza melodica, come in "Gorée (Go-ray)" - brano che vede il leader impegnato al clarinetto basso - o nell'iniziale "Detroit," passaggio che mette ben in chiaro l'intenzione funky e l'alternanza di situazioni tese e rilassate che segnano in maniera indelebile il carattere di Renaissance. Dicotomia ben evidente in "Jekyll & Hyde," nella quale confluiscono un'eleganza mainstream e un tiro ritmico prossimo agli scenari rock, che restituisce a molti passaggi la giusta dose d'imprevedibilità. Da sottolineare la brillantezza di "Revelation," brano dalla grande forza evocativa che fa il paio con la splendida "Setembro (Brazilian Wedding Song)," dove la voce sussurrata di Gretchen Parlato s'intreccia con quella di Rubén Blades, in quello che è il passaggio di maggiore suggestione.
Si può parlare di attese soddisfatte in pieno. Certo, non siamo di fronte a una svolta, a una nuova corrente intrapresa da Miller, ma molto probabilmente il bassista non ne ha avvertito il bisogno, e spesso vale la pena continuare a fare quello che riesce meglio.
