Randy Brecker ha navigato a vista nei mari della contaminazione. Maestro nell’applicazione degli insegnamenti di Miles Davis su octaver e harmonizer, il trombettista non si fece di certo pregare quando nel lontano 1966 si unì alla pazza avventura dei Blood, Sweat & Tears: un paio di stagioni prima di consegnare alla storia Child Is the Father to the Man e poi via per la sua strada. Che avrebbe riservato ancora tante sorprese.
A iniziare proprio dall’ambito famigliare dove si aggirava un altro grande innovatore del jazz moderno: Michael Brecker (scomparso lo scorso gennaio) con cui avrebbe indicato altre strade (i Brecker Brothers), incroci tra la forma canzone e il jazz-rock.
Quella fu una stagione felice, piena di talento e creatività a tal punto da far diventare i fratelli Brecker la più ricercata sezione fiati in circolazione. Ma quel tempo non ritornerà più. E questo documento visivo, registrato al New Morning Jazz di Ginevra nel 2004, ci riconsegna la magica tromba breckeriana in una versione più traditional.
Accompagnato dal trio dell’eclettico pianista Niels Lan Doky, Brecker ci da un saggio della sua maestria ripercorrendo le strade di ormai consolidati standard (“On Green Dolphin Street”, “Star Eyes”, “Blue Moon”), dividendo e condividendo la scena con la band che lo accompagna.
Il film si sofferma molto sui dettagli che ritraggono i singoli assolo degli artisti e potrà essere delizia per i tanti imitatori musicisti in giro. Per il resto, un’intervista al trombettista, che ripercorrere i momenti più esaltanti della sua carriera, chiude un DVD che è come un sigillo nella importante carriera di Randy Brecker.
