Uri Caine - Gust Tsilis: Pure Affection
Dall’altra Gust Tsilis, misconosciuto specialista di uno strumento ostico come il vibrafono, raramente esposto in concerti ed esibizioni, ma prezioso collaboratore di musicisti come John Abercrombie, Tim Berne, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano per citarne alcuni. E, soprattutto, uno dei pochi vibrafonisti in grado di scostarsi significativamente dalla linea rossa Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, Stefon Harris, attraverso un linguaggio unico e originale.
L’incontro, che prometteva scintille, si risolve in una pacata conversazione tra due vecchi amici che, abbandonati i furori giovanili (musicali s’intende), si affidano alla saggezza della maturità e, sorseggiando idealmente un buon vino da meditazione, si lasciano andare ai sentimenti e alle emozioni più pure.
Atmosfere pacate e riflessive quindi, ma mai banali, perché i due sanno come solleticare l’interesse dell’ascoltatore attento. Porgendo particolare attenzione al suono dei rispettivi strumenti, evitando naturali e quasi obbligate sovrapposizioni timbriche, distillando frasi e accordi in un reciproco gioco di ascolto e di grande rispetto per le pause e i silenzi.
Emerge in Pure Affection il lato delicato, un po’ malinconico e un po’ romantico dei due musicisti, ma la sensibilità con la quale affrontano i quattordici brani del disco, toglie di mezzo qualsiasi tipo di deriva nostalgica e di leziosità stilistica.
