John Beasley: Positootly!
Secondo CD per la Resonance (dopo Letter to Herbie), "Positootly" consolida il ritorno alla pratica jazzistica da parte di Beasley. Un ritorno in grande spolvero, dopo i fortunati quanto prolungati trascorsi holliwoodiani nella veste di compositore/arrangiatore.

Una proposta che si sviluppa nel segno del groove, con tanto drive, aromi funky e soul. Sette composizioni originali, un classico dell'hard bop costituiscono il cuore di un percorso estremamente dinamico, in cui si innestano con esiti meno felici la bossa di Jobim ed il nuovo tango di Piazzola. Una pratica fedele ai primi trascorsi discografici del pianista statunitense, di chiara ascendenza post-bop, riproposta su eccellenti livelli.

Ad esaltare l'espressività del leader, due grandi guest: Benne Maupin al sax e Brian Lynch alla tromba. Come era lecito attendersi da loro, assoli scoppiettanti e felice comunicativa. In bell'evidenza ovviamente anche Beasley, superbamente in azione al fender rhodes.

Svetta però su tutti il drumming scintillante di Jeff Tain Watts, a far volare con varietà metrica gli interventi fiatistici. Niente di nuovo all'orizzonte; tanta la vitalità e la gioia che questa musica ci trasmettono.
