Pommelhorse è il nome che questo quintetto svizzero ha deciso di darsi, forse in ricordo degli esercizi di ginnastica al cavallo con maniglie che evidentemente faticavano a digerire a scuola. Il suono è austero ma non troppo scuro, anche grazie al piano elettrico di Olivier Zurkirchen, sempre pronto a tessere le trame sulle quali i clarinetti di Lukas Roos e i saxofoni di Joel Graf dialogano con arguzia e prontezza in un clima che spesso sfiora il genere colonna sonora.

La sezione ritmica è ben allineata con quello che succede in proscenio e sa farsi trovare sempre pronta, scattante e precisa, pungolante al punto giusto. Le composizioni sono tutte a firma collettiva del gruppo e riflettono un approccio molto raffinato che pesca principalmente dal rock progressivo e dal filone cameristico del jazz. Le atmosfere sembrano più mitteleuropee che non anglosassoni, ma il confine è davvero labile.
