The Whammies: Play the Music of Steve Lacy Vol. 2

Nel primo trimestre di quest'anno, il brillante sestetto voluto in primo luogo da Jorrit Dijkstra e Pandelis Karayorgis per reimmergersi in quello straordinario scrigno che è il songbook di Steve Lacy, si è riunito una seconda volta in sala d'incisione, con esiti persino superiori al pur notevole album d'esordio.

Là le pagine lacyane riesumate erano sette, qui salgono a undici (sempre con puntuale dedica ad personam), guadagnandone in concisione, ciò che l'autore (che pure non disdegnava le lunghe cavalcate) avrebbe certamente apprezzato. E qui come là si termina con una pagina monkiana: là "Locomotive," qui "Shuffle Boil".

Un altro punto di contatto (e quindi una linea netta, assolutamente condivisibile) fra questo e quel disco risiede nell'alternare situazioni più prossime all'originaria "grammatica" lacyana con altre in cui ci si concede qualche libertà in più, peraltro sempre nel rispetto dello spirito che le informa tutte (spirito, com'è noto, molto coesivo, fortemente identitario, proprio come accadeva nell'amatissimo Monk).

Ci sono, del resto, fior di solisti, in questo gruppo (e citeremmo Bishop, Oliver e ovviamente Bennink su tutti) e non c'è, per contro, l'icona lacyana per antonomasia: il sax soprano. Vorrà pur dire qualcosa...
