Se le etichette avessero ancora senso compiuto nel linguaggio in continua evoluzione di chi parla intorno alla musica improvvisata potremmo dire che Perennial è post-bop con venature free a ottimi livelli di modernità e di creatività. Rob Garcia, batterista dalle nobili frequentazioni (Chris Cheek, Joe Lovano, Myra Melford, Dave Binney, Ben Monder, Diana Krall, Reggie Workman, Bob Berg, per citarne alcuni), psicologo, profondo conoscitore di tecniche di meditazione, promotore di Connection Works, organizzazione di musicisti no-profit radicata in Brooklyn, si circonda di giovani e talentuosi musicisti che garantiscono freschezza e imprevedibilità al suo terzo album da leader.

Dan Tepfer è pianista che dispiega grandi doti e grande sensibilità rielaborativa pur partendo da materiale semplice e rimanendo nell'ambito di un jazz tonale. Noah Preminger possiede un eloquio ereditato dai grandi tenoristi del passato ma figlio del suo tempo, a proprio agio con sonorità e ritmi delle culture giovanili. Il bassista Chris Lightcap, il più noto dei tre, nonostante la giovane età è richiestissimo sideman, vantando collaborazioni di prestigio con Joe Morris, Anthony Braxton e Cecil Taylor; il suo supporto è garanzia di classe e creatività.

Mentre Garcia, oltre al suo drumming frastagliato, dinamico, propositivo mette in campo una scrittura accattivante, ricca di sfumature, articolata, nella quale si inserisce una scansione ritmica mutevole che crea i presupposti per sviluppi fantasiosi degli interventi solistici.

Disco solido e convincente.
