Miguel Zenon: Oye!!! - Live In Puerto Rico
Il disco è la registrazione di un concerto del gennaio 2011 a "El Taller Cé" di Puerto Rico e precede di un mese l'incisione di Alma adentro, l'ultimo prodotto del suo quartetto, ancora focalizzato sulla tradizione musicale della sua terra. Non è quindi una sorpresa trovare, subito dopo l'introduzione, il celebre "Oye Como Va" di Tito Puente, il mitico percussionista e bandleader d'origini portoricane.
Il tema si snoda per oltre 14 minuti in un susseguirsi di richiami al tema, starts and stops, articolati ed eclettici interventi di Zenon, un assolo di Valentin e un formidabile finale percussivo Reynaldo De Jesus. Il successivo brano, "El Necio," omaggia il cantautore Silvio Rodríguez, altra figura centrale della musica latina. Miguel Zenon mantiene in parte la delicata linea melodica del brano aggiungendo un intervento infuocato e lasciando al bassista ampio spazio per un riflessivo assolo.
Nei temi successivi il clima di fondo non cambia. Zenon conferma di essere un sassofonista ricco di risorse, tecnicamente ineccepibile, tanto sensibile negli accenti quanto appassionante nel fraseggio guizzante e articolato. In questa formazione il virtuosismo tecnico non si sovrappone al raccontare e la teatralità della performance live è bilanciata dal suo spiccato gusto narrativo. Esemplare da questo punto di vista il lungo "Hypnotized".
