Empirical: Out 'n' In

Il secondo CD della formazione inglese Empirical, è imperniato sulla celebrazione di Eric Dolphy e del suo Out to Lunch. Sia pur limitato dalle gabbie ritmico-armoniche dell'estetica rivisitata, è comunque un buon disco, nel riproporre la profonda carica emotiva della musica dolphiana.

Amabile divertissement di una formazione giovane, il CD difetta però di compiuto spessore compositivo ed espressivo, per attestarsi come mero compendio di elevato bagaglio tecnico. I musicisti sono bravi e promettenti ma come sound di gruppo sono ancora acerbi. E nell'omaggiare via via stili diversi del jazz (di recente Cannonbal Adderley), non hanno ancora trovato una via personale che vada oltre la logica del decorativismo e del camaleontismo.

È certamente ammirevole la loro distanza rispetto agli stili oggi dominanti ed un'ottica di manierismo nel quale loro malgrado ricadono. Rispetto al modello proposto c'è ben poco di nuovo nel ridisegnare gli asimmetrici, sghembi voli dolphiani, fino a proporne colori e stilemi. Un CD ben suonato, ma non indispensabile.
