Jakob Bro, Joe Lovano: Once Around the Room - A Tribute To Paul Motian
Rispetto a questi, il tributo del collettivo guidato da Joe Lovano e Jakob Bro è quello stilisticamente più affine e in continuità con la musica del grande batterista e compositore. Ovviamente, hanno svolto il loro peso le passate, e più o meno prolungate, partnership del sassofonista e del chitarrista.
Nell'aderire a quell'estetica, il progetto non si appiattisce a formulare un'operazione nostalgica o inutilmente rievocativa. Presenta composizioni originali (due a testa dai co-leader, un brano improvvisato collettivamente da un'idea di Lovano e una composizione di Motian -"Drum Music"-presente nell'album del 1979 Le Voyage) con un taglio innovativo e sviluppi articolati.
Eccezione sono le due intime ballad composte da Bro: "Song to an Old Friend" e "Pause" che ricordano la malinconica vena lirica comunque presente in Motian. Negli altri brani del disco si rinnova il fascino avventuroso di un'estetica sempre avvincente: i fraseggi ellittici di Lovano convivono con gli accordi insinuanti e la timbrica lancinante di Bro, sulla base di sinuose e disarticolate trame ritmiche e metri cangianti. In quest'ultimo ruolo sono impegnati con pienezza di risultati, due contrabbassisti di prim'ordine come Larry Grenadier e Thomas Morgan, la chitarra basso di Anders Christensen e le batterie di Joey Baron e Jorge Rossy.
Tutti di grande interesse gli altri brani: "Sound Creation," l'improvvisazione collettiva che esalta il suono orchestrale dell'ensemble, il dodecafonico "As It Should Be" e "For the Love of Paul," dai tratti colemaniani e con ottimi assoli.
