The Avengers: On a Mission

Gli Avengers sono in missione. Ma non per conto di Dio, come disse John Belushi nel mitico film Blues Brothers, bensì nel nome della musica jazz-rock degli anni ottanta, un genere che cerca faticosamente di sopravvivere nella buona e nella cattiva sorte. Il gruppo è decisamente di altissimo livello, con Adam Holzman, già alla corte di Miles Davis, alle tastiere e i pluridecorati Lincoln Goines e Kim Plainfield, rispettivamente al basso e alla batteria. In primo piano troviamo il chitarrista sudamericano Beledo che si ispira ad Allan Holdsworth senza però perdere la propria originalità di base, anche grazie ad una tecnica sopraffina che gli permette di controllare con agilità lo scorrere delle composizioni da lui stesso scritte e di snocciolare assoli da brivido.

Abbiamo nel repertorio anche una cover, quella "Portia" scritta da Marcus Miller per l'album Tutu di Miles Davis (uscito nel 1986) e spesso eseguita anche dal vivo dal gruppo del trombettista. Rispetto all'originale la versione degli Avengers è ancora più lenta e notturna, come un serpente che si snoda nella notte tropicale. Un'immersione ancora più profonda nel clima predominante di questo album che fa esplicito riferimento ad una visione della musica che si sta frantumando nella complessità della contemporaneità. Le tastiere di Adam Holzman sanno fare da giusto collante con la superba sezione ritmica e prendono anche importanti spazi solistici che ne sottolineano la coerenza stilistica. La ritmica spinge a dovere con energia e impatto. Tutto a posto dunque. Ma abbiamo l'impressione che la musica del futuro abbia preso altri sentieri.
