From author Larry Reni Thomas:

I am not on anybody's side. I am not on Lee Morgan's side. I am not on Helen Morgan's side. I am on the side of history. I understand people who loved Lee. And can also understand the people who loved Helen. But, I wrote this book for historical significance. I am an historian. I did what I was trained to do.

I knew when I first met Mrs. Morgan that I had to interview her so she could tell her side of the story. The story almost fell into my lap. In 1990, I met her when she was a student of mine at Shaw University CAPE (Center For Alternate Programs In Education), in Wilmington, North Carolina, where I was also an evening jazz host at the local public radio station, WHQR-FM. When she told me she was Lee Morgan's wife, I immediately asked her for an interview. In February 1996, a month before she died, she gave me a taped interview. In 2007, I published an article called “The Lady Who Shot Lee Morgan." It has been republished world-wide, translated into several languages. In 2014, I published the book The Lady Who Shot Lee Morgan.
