Saturday, June 21, 2008, at 7PM at Harlem's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (515 Malcolm X Boulevard), Something Positive, Inc presents: TRIBUTE - Celebrating the legacy of Cheryl Byron. Ms. Byron was a composer, acclaimed choreographer, educator, and founder of Something Positive. In 1976, Cheryl Byron was the first artist to perform a new style of music called RAPSO, in a calypso tent in Trinidad & Tobago. At the time, she was scoffed at poetry in a calypso tent?" Today Cheryl Byron is recognized as the Mother of Rapso. She played a significant role in the cultural life of Trinidad, and New York City, and was especially devoted to the community's children until her passing in June 2003. June is also Caribbean American Heritage Month, and Something Positive will celebrate Ms. Byron's stellar contribution to the artistic legacy of this city and the 5th anniversary of her passing.
TRIBUTE will include new and standard works from the repertoire of the company. Among the evening's offerings will be Ms. Byron's riveting Ancestral Chant" and Hosanna" choreographed by Sonny Salina. The Gift", an original Carnival Creation story written by the company's present Artistic Director Michael Manswell will close the show.
Something Positive is an African Caribbean performance arts and education organization dedicated to the art and culture of the African Diaspora. Utilizing a unique blend of dance, storytelling, theater, music and poetry, the ensemble comprises of dancers, singers, and musicians specializing in multi-media performing art presentation. The company has performed a repertoire of original material at venues such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Theater at Riverside Church, Aaron Davis Hall, Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, Brooklyn Museum and Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park. In 2007, Something Positive was honored to perform at the official dedication of the African Burial Ground National Monument (ABG) in New York City. Following their ABG performance, Something Positive was invited to perform at Cheyney University, America's Oldest Black Institution of Higher Education.
