Greek saxophonist and composer Sofia Roubati steps into the spotlight with her debut album Reflections—a sweeping and emotionally rich exploration of her identity as a global artist. Recorded in Athens with a 17-piece ensemble, the album draws from Roubati’s diverse background in jazz, classical music, film scoring, rock, and Greek/Mediterranean traditions, fusing them into a singular, cinematic sound. Reflections is set for release on November 7th, 2025.
Known for her expressive saxophone voice and evocative writing for screen and stage, Roubati splits her time between Athens, London, and New York, working also as a composer for film, dance, and media across Europe and the U.S. Her work has premiered at festivals worldwide—including in Atlanta, Miami, Italy, Berlin and New York—and earned awards such as Best Soundtrack at the International Istanbul Short Film Fest and Budapest Short Cut Film Festival. Her score for Beyond the Plaques, commissioned by the National Youth Ballet and English Heritage, was also nominated for Best Score at the International Sound & Film Music Festival 2025 in Varazdin, Croatia.
With Reflections, Roubati moves beyond genre and label, offering a deeply personal statement about artistic identity, heritage, and transformation. “The more I develop as an artist, the more I feel the pressure to define who I am,” she explains. “Why should I choose one style of music, be one kind of artist, be a specific person? Humans are so much more than that.” The album, recorded over four days at Sierra Studios in Athens, features two saxophones, guitar, bass, drums, a 10-piece string section, singer, and lavta—a Constantinopolitan lute—bringing together chamber orchestrations, jazz language, and Greek folk elements into a resonant, genre-defying whole.
Beyond its musical range, Reflections exhibits Roubati’s commitment to using music as a tool for awareness and dialogue. Whether addressing immigration, gender equality, or the purpose of an artist, her work seeks to open space for conversation and connection. She continues to compose for film, theatre, and dance across the UK, Europe, and the U.S., while also co-leading the London-based ensemble Yiasena with Turkish guitarist Ozenc Duzenli, exploring shared musical traditions through a jazz lens. From recording “Together Is Beautiful” at Abbey Road Studios for the Earth Orchestra Project to appearances at Preveza Jazz Festival and Lancaster Jazz Festival (UK), Roubati now offers Reflections as a statement of purpose: an ode to complexity, growth, and the ongoing journey of becoming.
