Skype is Now More Valuable Than the Entire US Recording Industry...

US-based Recording Industry Revenues, 2010: $6.85 billion.

Technology eviscerates again? Skype was originally created by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis (among others), also the original brains and entrepreneurs behind Kazaa. The distributed, peer-to-peer architecture of Kazaa heavily informed the Skype architecture—in fact, the name Skype is a modification of the words 'sky' and 'peer-to-peer.' Zennstrom and Friis ultimately minted billions by selling to eBay (in 2005), and a consortium of investors minted billions on the latest sell-off.

The US-based recording figure was supplied by the RIAA, and includes both physical and digital formats. It represents a drop of 10.9 percent from 2009, making it less than a $7 billion industry.
