Veteran drummer Paul Motian has always been a busy guy, but since renewing his relationship with ECM a couple of years back he's moved into overdrive, releasing two albums of his own (
I Have the Room Above Her last year, with his longstanding trio featuring guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano, and this year's
Garden of Eden, featuring his larger ensemble, formerly known as the Electric Bebop Band, now simply Paul Motian Bamd). He's also appeared on a number of other artists' discs, including Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava's
Tati and Bobo Stenson's latest,
Goodbye.
With all this activity, and another release due out next month in a quartet with Stenson, and Brits alto saxophonist Martin Speake and bassist Mick Hutton, now seems like the perfect time to catch up with Motian and find out more about this remarkable activity.
Contributing Editor Paul Olson did just that, and the result is an interview filled with insight and, at times, some plain old fun.
