Juilliard Jazz presents an evening of Brazilian jazz with guest artist, pianist Paulo Braga, performing with the Artist Diploma Ensemble, the most advanced Juilliard Jazz musicians, on Tuesday, November 20 at 8 PM in Paul Hall. Joining Mr. Braga from Brazil will be Eduardo Ribeiro on drums; Manual Silveira on flute and saxophone; and Marinho Andreotti on bass. The concert is part of Carnegie Hall’s Voices from Latin America festival.
Artist Diploma Ensemble members are alto saxophonist Michael Thomas, tenor saxophonist Robert Height, pianist Christopher Ziemba, bassist John Tate, and drummer Jeremy Noller.
In an exchange, Juilliard Jazz musicians will head to Brazil from December 1- 8 for concerts and master classes.

Pianist Paulo Braga has performed as a soloist with various orchestras and ensembles, such as São Paulo Wind Symphony and São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, Camerata Villa Lobos, Camerata Antique de Curitiba, Tatuí’s Symphony orchestra and String Camerata. He graduated in piano from the Conservatório de Tatuí and was responsible for the creation of the popular music department at the Conservatório de Tatuí in 1990 and was its coordinator until 1994. He taught piano and ensemble until 2008 when he stepped down from the institution. He has been pedagogical coordinator at EMESP – Tom Jobim, São Paulo State’s School of Music, since October 2009. With Paulo Flores, he is responsible for the Festival Brasil Instrumental, a highly-regarded event featuring Brazilian music. His main research interests are the study of piano in jazz and Brazilian popular music, as well as its fusion with different musical styles. In 2008, Mr. Braga was awarded the FUNARTE fellowship in the popular composition category, as well as the PROAC Fellowship from the São Paulo State Secretary of Culture in the CD recording category. He has been a member of Arrigo Barnabé’s group since 1988 and currently is performing the concert, “Caixa de Ódio – the Universe of Lupicínio Rodrigues.”
The next Juilliard Jazz concert is entitled “Just Jazz” and features Juilliard Jazz Ensembles performing jazz standards on Monday, December 10 at 8 PM in Juilliard’s Paul Hall. FREE tickets will be available beginning November 26.

Juilliard Jazz is one of the newest programs of performance education inaugurated by The Juilliard School. Founded in 2001 and having recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, Julliard Jazz offers degrees at bachelor, master, and artist diploma levels. Highlights from the 2011-2012 season include a tribute concert to legendary bassist Ron Carter in March 2012 with guest artists Benny Golson, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Hubert Laws, and Christian McBride; and concerts during the season with guest artists, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon; singer Jane Monheit with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra performing music from the American Songbook; saxophonist Joe Lovano with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra; and Gary Smulyan in “The Music of Gerry Mulligan” with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra.
Summer 2012 took Juilliard Jazz to West Palm Beach, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Melbourne, Australia; and Ephraim, Utah at Snow College for summer jazz camps.
Today, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra and its ensembles play more than 50 performances annually including appearances at the Detroit Jazz Festival and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and tour to destinations, such as Costa Rica, Colombia, Japan, and Brazil. Juilliard Jazz Ensembles perform regularly at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the world-renowned Blue Note in New York City. For the past several seasons they also have enjoyed week-long runs at Jazz at Lincoln Center with guest artists such as Ernie Andrews, {{Kenny Barron, Tom Harrell, Sean Jones, Lew Tabackin, Gerald Wilson, Bobby Watson, Frank Wess, and others.
These talented Juilliard young artists are taught by today’s most active, innovative, and respected jazz musicians. The experienced Juilliard Jazz faculty combines a remarkable variety of technical and musical skill, as demonstrated on stages and in recording studios worldwide. The Juilliard Jazz Quartet, its faculty ensemble, features Juilliard Jazz Artistic Director, drummer Carl Allen, saxophonist Ron Blake, bassist Ron Carter, and pianist Frank Kimbrough.
