A jazz concert celebrating the life of legendary saxophonist and composer John Coltrane inaugurates a series of musical events in Middle Collegiate Church's “Music at Middle" program this season.

The Coltrane concert will take place in the sanctuary of Middle Church on his birthday, Sunday, September 23, 2007, with a jazz quintet playing two sets, at 6 PM and at 8 PM. The Church is located in the East Village at 50 East Seventh Street, between First and Second Avenues, Manhattan. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for either set or $15 for both.

Playing will be Reggie Workman, bass, Roy Campbell, trumpet, Louie Belogenis, tenor sax, Andrew Bemkey, piano, with Warren Smith on drums.

Reggie Workman, who was a member of Coltrane's band in the 1960's, brings his deep understanding and mastery of music to the concert. The other members of the quintet, all masters of their respective instruments, were deeply involved and influenced by Coltrane's beautiful message. Thus, this annual concert of his music is a moving birthday tribute to him.

“One of my favorite Coltrane pieces is “Dear Lord"; it is haunting, evocative and deeply spiritual--like the man himself. His music is like a prayer. So, we are so proud to provide a spiritual home for his music on his birthday" says Dr. Jacqui Lewis, senior pastor at Middle Church.

Other concerts are scheduled through the fall and winter at Middle Church.

In addition, Middle Church will offer a worship service with jazz every Sunday evening at 6 PM, beginning on January 6, 2008.
