CONCORD: Native son will be honored by the State Senate next week
A Concord park may soon bear the name of one of the city's most famous natives, jazz genius Dave Brubeck.
The City Council on Tuesday will consider renaming Concord Boulevard Neighborhood Park the Dave Brubeck Park .
Brubeck performed at the park during the early years of the Concord Jazz Festival -- an event that made the city a music destination and inspired the construction of the Concord Pavilion.
The name change would also be a way of welcoming back 85-year-old Brubeck when he returns home next week to be recognized by the California Senate. Sen. Tom Torlakson, D-Antioch, will present a resolution commending Brubeck.
Here is someone who is world renowned and thrilled listeners for years with his wonderful (music) -- and we've never really honored him in the California state Senate," Torlakson said. The Concord part of this is so important because he is one of our own."
