But jazz - and its related industries - will only survive as a viable art form through the basic equation of artist and listener. The musicians are still out there, doing what they do best, whether it be legendary vocalist Mark Murphy (Cover), Miles Davis/Ornette Coleman alumnus and tabla player extraordinaire Badal Roy (Interview) or incendiary drummer Gregg Bendian (Artist Feature). And let’s not forget labels like Enja, releasing fine music for decades, or venues like The Local 269, giving jazz a much-needed home for just a few months now and hopefully many more.
Just to prove that jazz musicians will soldier on against overwhelming odds, take a look at our CD Review section, bursting with exciting new music, or our Event Calendar, a bounty of concerts every night.
It is easy to get discouraged with events transpiring around the jazz community but it is vital to stay involved, stay supportive and stay enthusiastic. Jazz is a music of individuals working together to create something bigger than themselves. That same modus operandi is just as important as a listener, concert goer, clubowner, label operator, writer or reader.
We’ll keep going and we hope you’ll be right there with us...
We’ll see you out there...
