Where is the strangest venue a performer has ever played a concert? Has there been a folk festival in an umbrella factory, a pop concert on a transatlantic aeroplane or a classical recital at a supermarket?

How about a jazz show at a railway museum? On Monday 11 July curious music lovers will be able to find out as the sound of Gerry Richardson’s Big Idea will fill Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon – as part of Durham Brass Festival 2005. Gerry Richardson is one of the few musicians on today's music scene still playing the wondrous Hammond organ, which is recognised as one of the most exciting sounds in jazz. People can expect an entertaining night out with a great band playing accessible original material including music with Funk, Samba, Soul, Swing, Gospel and African inspired beats. The audience will absorb the music inside one the country’s finest heritage attractions – Locomotion: The National Railway Museum. Gerry Richardson, 54, father of one from Prestwick, comments about being part of the Durham Brass Festival. He says: “Any celebration of music and the coming together of musicians and audiences gets my vote.” Gerry continued: “I think the Shildon concert will be great - as jazz, blues and trains blend perfectly together.” Shildon is a fitting location for the brass festival concert with its famous industrial roots; Shildon is respected as being one of the oldest railway towns in the world. Industry is a common link as the brass music scene is etched in the history of the region’s mining heritage. Durham Brass Festival 2005 is proving to be a big hit in the North East with people enjoying all kinds of music from traditional to contemporary brass. The Festival is a Durham Brass Initiative project and is part of the 2005 Alive Festival of Music – a yearlong celebration of music across the North East. Katy Banner, Arts Development Officer for Sedgefield Borough Council said: “Its fantastic that Gerry Richardson is bringing his Big Idea to Locomotion in Shildon. The mixture of jazz music and the stunning trains will make for an amazing evening of entertainment. The show ideally represents the whole feeling of the Durham Brass Festival, bringing music to a non-conventional venue.” On Monday 11 July Gerry Richardson’s ‘Big Idea’ will play Locomotion: The National Railway Museum in Shildon, the show commences at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £6 / concessions - £5 and are available by contacting +44(1388) 777 999 (National Railway Museum) or +44(1388) 816166 ext 4412 (Sedgefield Borough Council).
