Ron Kaplan: New York

In mezzo a tante cantanti giovani e carine c´è pure qualche collega maschio che cerca di ottenere i favori del pubblico. Un fenomeno che è pure seguito dalle grosse case discografiche e che ha portato al successo di Michael Bublè o Jamie Cullum. Ron Kaplan invece è di un´altra categoria d´età e così si trova a fare un disco autoprodotto, di alta qualità artistica, in quanto sa cantare con partecipazione e passione, in uno stile da crooner alla Mel Tormé o Tony Bennett.

Su questo disco, come si evince dal titolo, troviamo canzoni dedicate a New York che provengono dall´era swing o moderne, come "New York State of Mind" di Billy Joel. Alla batteria c´è il giapponese Akira Tana, che con molta discrezione e swing sa fare lievitare i brani scelti. La cosa più rimarchevole è che canzoni così eterogenee, provenienti da periodi e generi diversi, siano messe insieme in un disco che conserva unità e si fa ascoltare tutto di un fiato. Belle interpretazioni di "On Broadway" o "Drop Me Off in Harlem" che fanno subito pensare a come, nonostante la globalizzazione del jazz, ci siano delle cose in cui gli americani siano sempre avanti agli altri e di tanto.

La classe esecutiva proprio superba fa ascoltarli con piacere anche da chi con il genere ha poca dimestichezza. Da notare infine il bel lavoro in fase di produzione, effettuato insieme al pianista Larry Dunlap, anche questo un tassello che ha contribuito alla complessiva riuscita del disco.
