Larry Goldings

With his signature Hammond organ style and versatility onmany keyboards, Boston native Larry Goldings hastraversed not only the wide spectrum of jazz where he isperhaps best known, but also the worlds of funk, pop, andelectronic/alternative music.  High in demand as a sideman,Goldings' sound can be heard on scores of albums byartists in virtually every musical genre.  Some of his morenotable collaborations include tours and recordings withCarla Bley, Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette, Jim Hall,Jon Hendricks, Pat Metheny, Maceo Parker, MadeleinePeyroux, John Pizzarelli, John Scofield, Curtis Stigers, andJames Taylor.

Under his own name, Goldings has made ten critically-acclaimed albums, many of them featuring his well-knownorgan trio with Peter Bernstein on guitar and Bill Stewart ondrums.  Goldings' most recent project, "Trio Beyond" (ECM),earned him, John Scofield, and Jack DeJohnette a Grammynomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Album (2006).

Larry Goldings' musical compositions have been recordedby such artists as Michael Brecker, Jim Hall, JackDeJohnette, John Scofield, Toots Thielemans, CurtisStigers, Till Brönner, and Sia.  His songs and arrangementshave appeared in several motion pictures including ClintEastwood's "Space Cowboys" and John Madden's "Proof."

"Quartet" (2006) is his newest recording for PalmettoRecords.  It features Goldings on piano, Wurlitzer electricpiano, organ, harmonium, and accordion.  The band is JohnSneider (trumpet), Ben Allison (bass), Matt Wilson (drums),and guest vocalist Madeleine Peyroux.  Of the seeminglydisparate nature of the album, Goldings comments:

In the past few years I have delved into such a wide varietyof music that denying those influences in the making of thisrecord would have been dishonest. In fact, what interestsme most these days is the challenge of melding mydisparate influences into a cohesive and personal sound.

I am excited by the idea of having a Björk song alongsideGabriel Fauré, next to Chico Buarque, next to an Americanfolk song. And then in my own writing, I like the freedom ofgoing anywhere I want. Eclecticism is really "in" now, and Ilove it, but only when it's not forced....only when it soundshonest. The idea is to show the connections in music, howdifferent genres across the centuries are all so beautifullyrelated.

Clovis Nicolas: Blues in Blueprint: 12 Variations on the Blues

Read "Blues in Blueprint: 12 Variations on the Blues" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Il contrabbassista Clovis Nicolas presenta dodici differenti interpretazioni del blues, interpretando in trio brani personali e temi appartenenti ad epoche e autori  diversi: dai tradizionali “Abide with Me" e “Old Stack O'Lee Blues" a Duke Ellington, Wes Montgomery, Ornette Coleman, Carla Bley e altri. Con lui sono Carl Allen alla batteria e Larry Goldings al pianoforte, una scelta strumentale abbastanza insolita per quest'ultimo, da tre decenni ai vertici dell'organo Hammond. Goldings ha sporadicamente dato prova delle ...

This episode marks a massive milestone for LINER NOTES as this episode officially kicks off Year 9 of the podcast. Clovis Nicolas: Blues in Blueprint: 12 Variations on the Blues

Read "Blues in Blueprint: 12 Variations on the Blues" reviewed by Kyle Simpler

The blues has long functioned as something equivalent to comfort food in jazz, a familiar form that musicians return to again and again. On Blues in Blueprint: 12 Variations on the Blues, bassist Clovis Nicolas embraces that tradition while subtly reframing it. Rather than treating the blues as a fixed structure, Nicolas approaches it as a living foundation, exploring the many ways it continues to shape jazz across styles and eras. Born in the Ivory Coast and raised in ...

Larry Goldings: I Will

Read "I Will" reviewed by Joshua Weiner

Larry Goldings is best known as an organist with a particular gift for bass lines, as exhibited on high-profile releases such as the Grammy-winning Trio Beyond--Saudades with Jack DeJohnette and John Scofield (ECM, 2007). Nevertheless, he trained as a classical pianist and has stuck to the 88's for several recordings, including well-regarded work with Jim Hall and 1997's Awareness (Warner Brothers), with bassist Larry Grenadier and Paul Motian on drums. Arriving nearly three decades later, Golding's piano trio album I ...
