Temidayo Balogun

Hailing from Lagos, Nigeria, with ancestral ties to Ejigbo in Osun State, Temidayo Balogun is a composer and multi-instrumentalist. His sound moves across the saxophone, piano, flute, clarinet, and the talking-drum (gángan), guided by a pan-African vision.

In 2021, Balogun formed Temidayo Balogun + AKÉDE, an ensemble conceived as a vessel for cultural synthesis. This vision found its definitive voice in his 2023 debut studio album, Ìbà.

The album is a profound exploration of Yoruba identity, where West African rhythmic foundations are superimposed with daring harmonic structures. Through Ìbà, Balogun asserts himself not just as a musician but as a guardian of heritage. He translates the complexity of his roots into a universal language, inviting the world to witness the enduring power of the African spirit through the lens of modern jazz.

Temidayo continues his exploration of pan-african identity, which includes intersecting Jazz with African indigenous music, especially music of the Yoruba people from West Africa, perhaps referred to as afrojazz in his sophomore album, Afrolution. 

As a member of Boston's creative music community, Balogun performs with Eric Hofbauer Quartet, Charlie Kohlhase’s Saxophone Support Group, New England Jazz Collaborative, and the Makanda Project.

His role in The Makanda Project, led by John Kordalewski, has enabled him to perform alongside jazz legends such as Chico Freeman, Avery Sharpe, Dee Alexander, and Charles Tolliver, further solidifying his professional stature.
