Delia Fischer

“Delia Fischer is a Brazilian artist of the highest quality. She sings and plays my song beautifully. She gave it a new meaning. I feel very grateful!”

Ivan Lins, singer-songwriter

“In the constant search for new forms of Brazilian music, with all its variations and roots, I have an important ally in Delia. Her concept of mixing and filtering Brazilian influences through her unique musicality and personal joy stimulates my own creative work.”

Egberto Gismonti, composer and multi-instrumentalist

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Delia Fischer, singer, songwriter, pianist, and arranger, has earned two Latin Grammy nominations for Best Brazilian (MPB) Album of the Year, one in 2019 for Tempo Mínimo (Labidad) and another in 2021 for H.O.J.E. (Labidad). Tempo Mínimo earned five stars from Downbeat Magazine in 2019, which named it one of the Best Albums of the Year; it was also named “Best Latin Album” by Latina Magazine in Japan in 2019. Her music ranges from MPB to post-Bossa Nova, samba, and electronic pop.

Delia Fischer: Beyond Bossa (Origin), her ninth solo album, is her first sung mostly in English, with lyrics by American jazz journalist and songwriter Allen Morrison. It features as special guests the renowned jazz singers Luciana Souza and Gretchen Parlato, the New York Voices, bossa nova master Marcos Valle, Italian R&B star Mario Biondi, American Grammy-winning cellist Eugene Friesen and Brazilian jazz guitarist Chico Pinheiro. It will be available at Origin Records (www.originarts.com) and on major streaming platforms on September 20, 2024.

Delia has performed and recorded with Brazilian and international greats including Milton Nascimento (whose recording of one of her songs became the theme for a popular Brazilian soap opera), Egberto Gismonti, Gilberto Gil, Marcos Valle, guitarist Toninho Horta, Hermeto Pascoal, Romero Lubambo, Ney Matogrosso, Swedish singer Lisa Nilsson, Italian R&B star Mario Biondi, French-Camaroonian singer Valérie Ékoumè and Italian pop singer-songwriter Tony Canto.

Her eight previous albums as a solo artist are available on all platforms. Her solo discography includes: Andar Com Gil (2023, Jasmin Music); H.O.J.E. (2021, Labidad); Rainhas (2021, Labidad); Entre Amigos (2020, Labidad); Tempo Mínimo (2019, Labidad); Saudações Egberto (2011, Rob Digital + 2016, Tuff Beats Japan); Presente (2010, Dubas); and Antonio (1999, ECM). Her recording career started with Duo Fênix, a partnership with Claudio Dauelsberg, with the albums Duo Fênix (1988 - BMG Ariola, LP) and Karai-Eté (1990 - BMG Ariola, Brazil / In & Out Records, Europe and USA, LP).

Delia’s piano and voice studies started early. She studied piano with prominent Brazilian masters including classical and film composer Cesar Guerra-Peixe and famed Bossa-Nova/jazz pianist Luiz Eça (Tamba Trio), becoming a professional musician while still in her teens. She developed her singing abilities first in a choir at ProArte Music School in Rio and later worked with vocal coach Felipe Abreu. She soon built a reputation as a talented pianist and prolific composer in Brazil and Europe, including appearances at the Club New Morning in Paris, Sofia Jazz Festival, and the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Delia Fischer: Beyond Bossa

Read "Beyond Bossa" reviewed by Katchie Cartwright

An intriguingly multi-layered project, Beyond Bossa has unfolded over a number of years. The “beyond" in the title points in a few directions. A pianist, composer-arranger, singer (and dancer), Delia Fischer works across idioms: bossa nova, jazz, música popular brasileira (MPB), various types of Brazilian music, theater. Her recordings have earned her Latin Grammy nominations for Best Brazilian Album (MPB) in 2021 (H.O.J.E., Labidad Produções) and 2019 (Tempo Minimo, Labidad Produções). Further extending the boundaries, she called upon a far-flung ...

Delia Fischer: Beyond Bossa

Read "Delia Fischer: Beyond Bossa" reviewed by Allen Morrison

In 2019, after I'd been writing for DownBeat Magazine for about a decade, I was asked to review a batch of new albums from Brazil, including one by a Rio de Janeiro-based singer named Delia Fischer who wrote her own songs. I gathered that, in addition, she was a jazz pianist, an arranger, and the musical director for several hit musicals in Rio. She had worked with Brazilian legends like Marcos Valle, Egberto Gismonti, and Milton Nascimento, who recorded one ...
