Doruzka/Wylezol/Ballard: Andromeda's Mystery

				by Doug Collette

Drummer Jeff Ballard has kept himself busy and productive while his long-time collaborator, pianist/composer Brad Mehldau, has been engaged in projects other than the trio in which they share membership. Ballard lent his finely-honed percussion technique and instinctive empathy as a musician to the Fabian Willman Trio's Balance (CYH Records, 2022) as well as appearing on two tracks for Ant Law and Alex Hitchcock's Same Moon Same World (Outside In Music, 2022). Now the one-time tourmate of icon ...

Drummer Jeff Ballard reoriented the Brad Mehldau Trio from 2005-2018, after replacing Jorge Rossy. Ballard brought a degree of rock and was perhaps the source of a more subversive selection of material, such as covering Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun" and Radiohead's Knives Out." The quintet which pianist Nikol Bóková rounded up for her third album as a leader can be regarded as a showpiece of the young and dynamic talents stirring up the Czech jazz scene. Featuring the crafty skills of contemporary guitarist David Doruzka, French-horn player Radek Baborak's exceptional lyricism, and a versatile rhythm section made up of bassist Jaromir Honzak and Michal Wierzgon, Prometheus presents a highly melodious program which blends timeless lyricism with modern soundscapes to an effect that weighs ...

David Doruzka is from the Czech Republic. He plays impressionistic guitar very much in the Pat Metheny tradition. Indeed, while studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Doruzka was chosen by Metheny to participate as the only guitarist in the 2000 Aspen Snowmass Jazz Colony. Another major influence on his playing has been a teacher at Berklee, saxophonist Joe Lovano. After graduating, Doruzka stayed on in the US for a year, based in New York, where ...

Mr. Sabbagh played with untroubled self-assurance [...] Mr. Sabbagh avoided direct allusions to the saxophone totems. What he is working toward, simply and effectively, is a sincerely personal vocabulary." (Nate Chinen, New York Times). Jerome Sabbagh's new album is a trio recording of standards with bassist Ben Street and drummer Rodney Green called One Two Three" (Bee Jazz). The Jerome Sabbagh Quartet, with guitarist Ben Monder, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Ted Poor, a band which focuses on Jerome's compositions, ...
