The Gurdjieff Folk Instruments Ensemble: Music of Georges I. Gurdjieff

Personaggio importantissimo per la rinascita mistico-spirituale nel ventesimo secolo, Georges Ivanovic Gurdjieff era presente nel catalogo ECM fin dal lontano 1980, quando Keith Jarrett incise la sua personale interpretazione di una selezione dei suoi inni sacri, composti a partire da melodie tradizionali raccolte nel corso di numerose peregrinazioni in medio oriente, e consegnate al mondo occidentale attraverso la trascrizione per piano realizzata da un musicista suo discepolo, Thomas de Hartmann. Quella pianistica è rimasta finora la versione più conosciuta e diffusa, anche se recentemente non sono mancate altre riletture, come quella realizzata da Vassilis Tsabropoulos e Anja Lechner per piano e violoncello in una coppia di CD, sempre incisi per ECM.

La particolarità di questa nuova riproposizione della musica di Gurdjeff sta nel tentativo di recupero delle sue origini, attraverso l'arrangiamento realizzato per un ensemble di strumenti popolari orientali quali duduk, oud, saz, kanon, kamancha, santur e dap, in varie combinazioni che vanno dal solo all'insieme di sette strumenti diversi.

L'operazione, condotta da Levon Eskelian che dirige l'ensemble, si può definire riuscita, anche se nessuno è in grado di stabilire con esattezza quanto la musica così ricostruita sia vicina a quella ascoltata da Gurdjieff più di un secolo fa. Ma la sensazione di 'autenticità etnografica' degli arrangiamenti, come la descrive lo stesso Eskelian nelle note di copertina, è decisamente alta, ricreando un paesaggio sonoro in grado di evocare tempi e luoghi lontani dai nostri e di trasportarci in quei mondi in compagnia dello spirito di Gurdjieff.
