Andrew Cheshire: Morning Song
Andrew Cheshire is an excellent Philadelphia (area)-based jazz guitarist who has been releasing music on his Joule Records label since 1996. Of note is the superb Water Street Revival, accumulated over several recording sessions, and an introspective solo guitar project, Guitar Noir. Mr. Cheshire arrives today with a guitar-organ offering that is as much original as it is steeped in the genre’s traditions. Joined by organist Dan Kostelnik and drummer Jay Rosen, the guitarist performs songs that insinuate melody and whisper harmony, familiar and unfamiliar.

Aside form his own compositions, Mr. Cheshire pays special attention to Miles Davis by performing "Someday My Prince will Come" and "Sid’s Delight," as well as Davis’ own "Milestones." Cheshire is very comfortable in the zone of bebop and beyond, as is his support. Understated and tasteful, organist Dan Kostelnik ensures a steady groove and swinging personality. The same can be said for Jay Rosen, whose perfect time nails down every piece. This is a very relaxed and enjoyable session. Cheshire’s tune choice and tone set and maintain a mood of tranquility and respite. If you restrict yourself to a single guitar-organ disc this year, let this be the one.
