Nel disco in esame si ritrovano gli elementi chiave dell'espressività davisiana, magnificamente racchiusa nella tromba sordinata di "It Never Entered My Mind." Ma il più fulgido capolavoro del disco, oscillante tra l'estetica del bebop e l'hard bop, lo si ritrova in "Tempus Fugit" per assaporare un sestetto stellare comprendente J.J. Johnson, Jimmy Heath e Art Blakey.
Si sa che le antologie sono destinate ad un pubblico di neofiti e in tale favorevole ottica divulgativa vanno giudicate. Occorre però segnalare che i CD originali sono oggi acquistabili ad un prezzo irrisorio, per godere di un ascolto più completo e ben più pregnante. Ricorrendo ad una metafora gastronomica, si potrebbe definire l'ascolto di questa antologia il rapido spiluccamento di un lauto pranzo. A renderla allettante contribuisce il bel booklet allegato, ricco di informazioni su Davis e la Blue Note.
