About the Album

Jazzsinger and songwriter Lilly (DK) releases a new album titled, The Song Is You, on March 26, 2021 via Challenge Rocrds International. It was recorded in New York in one day in 2019 with two great musical talents and Rising Stars on the international jazzscene, guitarist Gilad Hekselman (ISR) and cornetist Kirk Knuffke (US). About this track chosen here, Up Jumped Spring, Lilly says: “There’s a lot of joy and playfulness in this version, I think, not least thanks to the creative and versatile musical gifts from Gilad Hekselman, that’s playing both guitar and body percussion on this track, and Kirk Knuffke on cornet. I hope it will bring a spirit of spring to many hearts and souls!” Lilly has so far released four critically acclaimed albums and the most recent, the duo album, Tenderly feat. Gilad Hekselman, received an overwhelmingly positive response from the US, Germany and Denmark and was selected as Top 5 Best Vocal Release 2017 by The New York City Jazz Record. In a review they a.o. wrote that “Tenderly is a truly superb recording, which rightly raises the expectations for her next effort”. Now Lilly is ready to present her fifth album. It was recorded on Aug 1st 2019 at Big Orange Sheep Studio i Brooklyn, New York. Gilad Hekselman performs again and on all ten songs, but this time he also generously shares his many versatile musical gifts on both acoustic and electric guitar as well as percussion and bodypercussion on a couple of songs. The cornetist, Kirk Knuffke, contributes with his eminent playing on seven songs. This new album features interpretations and arrangements of eight well-known and lesser- known jazz standards, a new composition by Lilly, Five Wild Geese, and an evocative version of the trad. Scarborough Fair. The open mood of the recording day and the playful and immediate approach to the songs characterizes the album, that offers both light and lightness, darkness and heaviness, glow, soul and swing. Gilad Hekselman and Kirk Knuffke have been part of the jazz scene in New York and around the world for more than a decade and both have been been named winners of the “Rising Star” critics poll by Down Beat Magazine a.o. They are critically acclaimed jazz musicians for their work in their own bands, with their own releases and as sidemen. Both of them and Lilly as well, have their roots in and a great love for the tradition, while interpreting and renewing it with openness, creativity and prescence. Lilly has played, recorded and collaborated with some of the finest, most talented and versatile creative musicians in Scandinavia, Europe and US. Among others Lew Soloff (US), Aaron Parks (US), Gilad Hekselman (ISR), Kirk Knuffke (US), Gustaf Ljunggren (S), Anders AC Christensen (DK), Jonas Berg (S), Jeppe Kjellberg (DK), Thommy Andersson (S), Krister Jonsson (S), Jacob Fischer (DK).
