About the Album

"Sekirei" is the first track from Japanese trumpeter Natsuki Tamura's album Koki Solo out July 9, 2021 on Libra Records. A unique musical vocabulary, extended techniques, and soaring lyricism mark Tamura's approach to his instrument. That quest for the new and unexpected is all over his fourth solo recording, named for the Japanese term for one's 70th birthday. Always the seeker with a sense of fun and curiosity, the album naturally features Tamura's dazzling trumpet technique and imagination, but he throws in a few surprises, making his recorded debut on piano and playing a percussion set up consisting of pots and pans from his kitchen. The result is quintessential Tamura—by turns whimsical, focused, lyrical, abstract, and always surprising. Says Tamura, “When I play, I enjoy myself first. I don’t analyze what I do or what I think, I just pursue my feelings.” On the trumpet piece “Sekirei,” Tamura interrupts his own fast, rippling lines with more spacious ones, alternating a clear, pure tone with a growling, buzzy sound. It's one of eight diverse tracks on an album full of playfully thoughtful, whimsically creative sonic adventures by a true original.
