About the Album
Drummer Phil Haynes’s third recording with his Day Dream Trio is a look at the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn which is anything but nostalgic. Along with pianist Steve Rudolph and drummer Drew Gress Haynes brings a sense of invention and inquiry to these classic compositions. “Perdido,” from the pen of the indispensable Ellington band member Juan Tizol, shows that Haynes can swing with the same originality and sincerity that is found in his free improv outings.
